Introduction to Ayurveda

“Drop the idea of becoming someone, because you are already a masterpiece. You cannot be improved. You have only to come to it, to know it, to realize it. ~ Osho

Ayurveda is the oldest tradition of holistic medicine practiced in the world today. It teaches us that we are not separate from nature but a living expression of the environment around us.Everything that exists in the universe exists within us. Our bodies are therefore a reflection of the changes in the environment we live in.

Nature is dynamic stillness. Her movements are not random and Her cycles flow effortlessly and organically. Tuning our rhythm with the rhythm of nature is key to creating balance in our body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda describes the universe as a continuous process of creation destruction and rebirth. Understanding the five great elements (Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth)and our unique expression of them is the key to unlocking our power to heal ourselves.

In Ayurveda, there are three ways the elements combine in nature and us. They are called the Doshas, and in Sanskrit: Kapha, Pitta and Vata. No one Dosha is better than the other and your unique combination is the gift of who you are and the key to balance!

Kapha – Water/Earth – Energy of Stability

Qualities – Moist, Cold, Dense, Oily, Heavy

Kaphas have a relaxed attitude, are loyal friends and can be trusted. Those people you would describe as being grounded. They are the peace makers and home builders. In physical activities, they are not fast but have great endurance and possess a great memory. Kapha people, when out of balance, may be difficult to motivate at times, prone to depression, weight gain and lung issues.

Pitta – Fire/Water – Energy of Transformation

Qualities – Hot, Sharp, Light, Oily, Spreading

Pittas are organized, have sharp focus, athletic, competitive, may be prone to frustration. They are quick learners, usually athletic and have great digestion. You can count on them to get things done and are natural leaders. They are people described as sharp, hot-headed and “type-A”.  Pittas who are out of balance may be egocentric, demanding, impatient and critical. Often the are hardest on themselves. Pittas are prone to acid reflux, stomach issues and skin rashes.

Vata – Space/Air – Energy of Movement

Qualities – Dry, Mobile, Rough, Light, Subtle, Cold

Vatas are outgoing, fast talking and fast moving. They are spontaneous, love to travel, creative and connected to spirit. They are those people often describes and “air-head” or spacey and ungrounded. Out of balance Vatas can run late, are easily distracted, cannot sit still, suffer from anxiety, worry and insomnia. They are prone to constipation and have a difficult time gaining weight.

“Take hold of your own life. See that the whole existence is celebrating. These trees are not serious, these birds are not serious. The rivers and the oceans are wild, and everywhere there is fun, everywhere there is joy and delight. Watch existence, listen to the existence and become part of it.” ~ Osho

Be willing to explore. Start to notice these energies in you and those around you. Remember to follow a median path, eat with the season, slow down and enjoy simple pleasures.

I wish you well on your journey to well being.

Enjoy,
