Super foods are a special category of foods found in nature. What makes them so super? They are known to be low in calories but are high in nutrients. Often times referred to as nutrient dense, super foods are the opposite of an empty calorie. Being nutrient dense means they pack a lot of punch in a little package and are an excellent source of anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins. Did you know that anti-oxidants are considered essential nutrients but that we cannot make them ourselves? So by eating super foods you are providing your body with an essential nutrient you would otherwise be missing. Below are a few of my favorite super foods and a recipe for a super foods smoothie I’ve been digging lately. Please comment on the post to let me know your favorite super food and if you enjoyed the smoothie.
Chia Seeds – Chia seeds are considered to be one of the most nutritious super foods on the planet! You got it. These are the same little seeds used to create Chia Pets and have more Omega-3 EFAs than salmon, more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk and are loaded with iron, fiber, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A and B12. Plus they are considered a complete protein. Sarah Wilson wrote a great blog this week on 13 things to do with chia seeds. Check it our here.
Hemp Hearts – One of my current favorite super foods. Hemp hearts are packed full of protein and contain all 10 essential amino acids your body needs. Hemp is a rich and balanced source of essential fatty acids and include Omega-3, Omega-6 and a rare form of Gamma Linolenic Acid. Studies have shown hemp helps to maintain heart health, healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels and aid in hormonal balance. Hemp hearts are also a great source of Chlorophyll and Vitamin E.
Maca – Maca is a powerful ancient superfood native to Peru. It has been cultivated for at least 2,000 years and was used by the Inca to increase strength and endurance. It is a highly nutritious food that increases energy, promotes libido, balances hormones and enhances immune system function. Maca gives a nice roasted nutty flavor to your smoothies.
