I love it when the healing power of Ayurveda goes mainstream. It seems like that is happening more and more these days. When I started my coaching practice nearly seven years ago I remember having to spend a lot of time just explaining what the heck Ayurveda is. Now I walk into a coffee shop and golden milk is on the menu. How cool is that? So why are the healing powers of Ayurveda becoming more mainstream? One simple reason is because it works.
Turmeric is one of Ayurveda’s most revered herbs. It is a profoundly powerful healer with natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. In addition, turmeric helps purify the blood, clear the skin and balance blood sugar.
Turmeric tea or golden milk is a great way to get the benefits of turmeric daily. I drink it most nights before bed especially when I’m feeling run down to get an extra immunity boost and a good dose of antioxidants. Plus, by drinking turmeric tea you also get the the anti-inflammatory and digestive aid benefits of ginger, and black pepper contains a number of essential nutrients, including manganese, iron and vitamin K.
Simple Golden Milk Recipe
First make some turmeric paste. You can take this on its own daily or use it in other recipes. I put it in my oatmeal and mix it into yogurt.
- ½ cup of filtered water
- ¼ cup of turmeric powder
- ½ teaspoon of ground pepper
Slowly begin to heat the water on medium heat. Add turmeric and pepper and stir well, so you create a smooth paste. It takes about 7 to 9 minutes to get the paste properly cooked. If it becomes too dry, you can add some more water.
- 1 cup of milk of choice (almond, coconut or dairy)
- 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric paste
- 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup or to taste (optional)
- Small piece of fresh, peeled ginger root
First, blend all ingredients in a high speed blender until smooth. Then, pour into a small sauce pan and heat for 3-5 minutes over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Drink immediately.
