Living in the digital age has its upside for sure. On one hand we are more globally connected and have more entertainment, information and conversation at our finger tips then at any time in history. The average American checks their devise about 157 times per day and spends up to 5 hours a day on their screens. While there’s no doubt technology has made our lives easier research suggests that our smartphone addiction is taking a toll on our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
One of the main causes of disease in Ayurveda is the misuse, over use or neglect of our senses. Day in and day out our senses are taxed by our habitual rushing, multitasking, and by our constant need to respond to our smartphones. All this input overwhelms our senses, taxes our nervous system and leads to a host of health issues, including adrenal fatigue, insomnia, poor digestion, weight gain, and general malaise. Ayurveda strongly recommends taking a break from technology. That’s why a digital detox is an essential part of my seasonal cleanse.
The Oxford Dictionary defines digital detox as a period of time during which a person refrains from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, regarded as an opportunity to reduce stress or focus on social interaction in the physical world.
Here are a few benefits of doing a digital detox:
- Reconnects you to more natural rhythms
- Reduces stress
- Improves sleep
- Increases creativity and productivity
- Improves relationships
- Boosts moods
- Creates more free time
- Reduces feelings of overwhelm
Here are my top tips on how to do a digital detox:
- Commit to being devise free from 7pm – 7am daily
- Turn off your notification alarms
- Make meal times devise free, especially when dining out with friends and family
- Unplug one whole day per week
- Consider a devise free holiday

The practice of cleansing is considered a vital part of an Ayurvedic lifestyle. Better boundaries around the use of smart devises is necessary and a digital detox is needed every now and then to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I found huge benefits from my digital detox. I’d love to hear how you keep your sanity in the digital age.
Wishing You Vibrant Living,
Kate
